My Background
I was first introduced to pottery as a freshman at Bethany College in West Virginia. My instructor believed very strongly that a good pot was one that was useful, but also well made, and pleasing to look at and hold in one's hand. In his classes, we dug local clays and processed them, made coil built and wheel thrown pots, threw on kick wheels, and finished pieces in gas or wood fired kilns. He asked us to make pieces that were straightforward, that someone would want to use and not simply admire, and this has been my guiding philosophy.
